Food Technology

In this subject area, our aim is to develop pupils’ practical skills so that they can work safely and with confidence to produce a meal for themselves and their family.

We begin to build knife skills and safe use of the hob and oven using the ‘License to Cook’ programme through years 7 and 8. In year 9 we cover additional aspects of National Curriculum Design Technology to incorporate looking at existing products to develop ideas and how products are produced in industry.

Pupils have the option to continue to study Home Cooking Skills through years 10 and 11 where we build and consolidate independent working to produce nutritious, tasty meals and snacks such as curries, stir bread and biscuits, to name just a few of the recipes we follow. Our practal work is backed up with lessons healthy eating and how to cook economically.

In the Sixth Form, we look at developing teamwork and using initiative by using the ‘Food-wise’ programme to obtain the ASDAN Aware of Personal Effectiveness.
