Raising money for charity

This term we raised money for Children in need, we each did our bit making cakes, wearing pjamas or even bringing a teddy to school. Everyone got stuck in and had some fun with all the adapted Children in Need lessons such as “Measure pudsy bear” to “Decoarating and making a Pudsy bear”

The Friends of Priestley Smith School is a very active and supportive group of parents, friends, staff and volunteers who help to raise funds for the school. These funds provide additional experiences and equipment which it would otherwise be very difficult to offer to students.

Examples of this are subsidised visits to Warwick Castle and Shugborough Hall as part of the history curriculum, to Birmingham Thinktank as part of the science curriculum and to Stratford Theatre and the Birmingham Repertory Theatre to support literacy based work. In addition to subsidising student visits, The Friends of Priestley Smith also purchase vital specialist equipment for students such as Braillenotes, which cost £4500 each, CCTVs costing £2000 each, specialist access software such as Zoomtext and Jaws etc. As a result the school is well resourced with up to date equipment which supports student access and prepares them well for future life.

The Friends of Priestley Smith hold events to raise money and also make bids to charitable organisations and businesses on behalf of the school. One such bid this year was the very successful application to the Variety Club, which in conjunction with the 100 Property Club, provided a large part of the funding for a brand new minibus, seen below. The Friends of Priestley Smith raised the initial £9000 required for the bus, with the Variety Club and 100 Property Club donating the remainder of the amount.

Priestley Smith School students, staff and governors are extremely grateful for the invaluable support provided by The Friends of Priestley Smith.
