Art Project: ‘Eye-Pod and Eye-Pads’

This week (1st-4th July) has been an extremely exciting and absorbing week for years 8 and 9.

Pupils have participated in an Art and Design project with Artist Jan Niedojadlo and his wife Catherine. The brief was to design a sculpture that was interactive, tactile and meaningful. In addition, the methods, equipment and materials used had to be totally accessible to the team of pupils involved.

The pupils concerned have been ‘on a journey’ which has seen them totally involved every step of the way. They have discussed and modelled ideas, designed the sculpture, constructed it and enhanced it with expressive decoration and evocative sounds.

From an initial idea offered by Ibraheem on the first day, the pupils have constructed the “Eye Pod”. A huge ‘eye’ complete with ‘retina’ and eyelashes! It is a ‘pod’ which pupils can enter and then sit down on their own ‘eye pads’. It is made even more complete with a piece of music developed by Yusuf and Avtar based on all the sounds they encountered during the activity.

The Pupils had a fabulous week and they have produced a wonderful sculpture which will really impress all who see and experience it.

The Pupils involved all week were: Rebecca, Faiza, Conna, Mohammed, Ibraheem, Yusuf, and Avtar. They were also helped for some of the time by Aysha, Hamzah and Sade.

An enormous thanks to Mrs Levis (Art Teacher) and her supporting team.

And a very special thanks to our guests from ‘Art Sense’ for funding the project, Jan and Catherine for being such a pleasure to work with and Ian Reynolds our ‘hands-on’ vice-chair of governers.
